Te Reo Māori for Genomics
One of the barriers to Māori engagement with science and technology is a lack of transferable language. This appears to be evident for genetic and genomic science. However, the few Māori researchers in this area would contend that many concepts central to these fields have conceptual parallels in Te Ao Māori.
This project intends to bring together experts in Te Reo Māori and tikanga, research science, and education to explore the language of genomics in a Māori context. It will scope the development of language resources that will enable more open dialogue between the worlds of western science and mātauranga Māori. With the development of a common language this project ultimately aims to create a more accessible pathway for Māori to engage in the science and for western science to value matauranga Māori.
These language resources will provide a pathway to thinking about genomics from a Te Ao Māori perspective which could be adopted by any researcher.
This project is being developed and we are looking for partners.
