Gene Technology Bill Submission – GFANZ Recommends Starting Over
GFANZ Council made a submission to the Gene Technology Bill 2024 noting significant flaws and omissions in the bill. We clearly acknowledge the potential utility of modern gene technologies for all people in Aotearoa. At the same time, we have serious concerns in regards to this bill around Māori rights and interests, honoring te Tiriti, understanding who may or may not benefit, and the insufficient separation from political influence.
We outline some of our concerns in ten key points. With those points in mind, and in alignment with our constitutional objects, we make the following recommendation: The bill be withdrawn at this stage and a broader, Te Tiriti lead inclusive process be conducted to address the bill’s considerable shortcomings which we described in our key points.
